How Blackpool has been rejuvenated

Rejuvenated is when something, or in this case a place has been brought back to life, remade to appeal again. In recent years Blackpool has decided to freshen up to attract back tourism. The Butler model shows clear resemblence to how Blackpools popularity has increased and decreased over the years, here are some examples of how its gotten back on track.

Blacpool
This is a good example of interesting architecture which gives Blacpool an appealing image, its been livened up compared to what Blackpools shopping centres, and high streets used to look like.

Also Blackpools Pleasure beach went through a stage of being "old" and boring because back in the days of development it seemed so new, but its stayed the same for several years, meaning Blackpool started to loose out in interest with the sights and activities available. But now this problem has been looked into and Pleasure beach has had areas rejuvenated, such as new bigger rides, more choice and more cafes etc.

To think Blackpool pier was built many years ago now, it became one of the main characteristics and there for grew important but also not as appealing because there was nothing going on with it. it tragicly burnt down a few years back. In a way it gave Blackpool a chance to think how they could get back the popularity of the seaside resort back, so brought back a better pier for the town.

Blackpool stages of the butler model

Black pool and how it has changed over the years

Butler_mode

The butler model gives a rough idea of how Blackpools poularity has changed over the years, starting with the involvement stage of Blackpool.

Blackpool
This picture is simply when the trams started becoming popular transport around Blackpool, this shows development taking place. The transport was frequent along with the accomadation and food, etc. It was a massive leap from the period of involvement because already larger companies had built hotels on the sea front and the trams were used very often.http://webspace.webring.com/people/l3/303032/710-1.jpg

The period of the butler model,is involvement when the town had not yet quite come together but the first few hotels were built and more services were provided for tourists showing up. But still again hadnt moved that fast on from exploration because the sea front had very few hotels let alone buildings at all.http://www.worldbookhotel.com/_data/images/blackpool-history.jpg

Exploration

Ride
This image is a simple example of consolidation because it once was a popular attraction that everyone wanted to visit, but now more rides have been built its not keeping its impact any more.http://hotels.blackpooltravel.co.uk/hotels/photos/attractions/104488.jpg

Sidmouth coastal protection homework

Sidmouth beach has several ways in which it protects its coastal area.It mainly consists of hard engineering, such as rock amour, this is a method that stops the energy of waves waring away the beach. They are very common in beaches and have a long term affect.

Also sidmouth beach has a sea wall, which also prevents erosion,in fact this is one of the most affective ways of stopping it,but its disadvantages are that it doesnt look very appealing with the coastal scenery and is also a very expensive method.

gabions is the last costal protection method on sidmouth beach. This is a wire mesh holding in the soft rock of the cliff together,to stop it from falling onto the beach. this is soft rock engineering and comes at a lower cost which is an advantage ,but on the other hand is not as affective as hard engineering methods such as sea walls etc.

BED ZED home work :D

A sustainable city is designed with consideration of environmental impact, and Bed zed,the largest economical community is a good example. Several reasons why it is sustainable is because the whole area of Hackbridge in London has been made an energy efficient, environmental friendly housing development.

The whole area is run on wood chippings, recycling them from being wasted and there for not using electrical energy. They also use no other energy like heat etc because the houses have been specially designed to keep in heat in winter and cool in summer.Thick walls dont let cold heat into the houses in the winter and also do the same job from keeping out hot air in summer so no not central heating is used.

As well as this feature Bedzed is purposely built facing the south conservatories collecting natural light.then a feature for of the house for the summer is the vents on each roof, they capture the wind and ventilate the house in the summer acting as air conditioning. In normal homes in the uk energy use accounts for twenty percent of our carbon emissions,Bedzed aims to reduce this right down to zero. And to conserve water the roofs are covered with a special succulent plant called Seedom,so when it rains the plant sucks in the water instead of letting it drip down and people collect the water and use it for flushing the toilets in their homes.

So overall this housing development is doing a very sustainable job at keeping co2 at bay and should deffinately be considered a sustainable settlement .

zabbaleen homework :)

Who are they?

The Zabbaleen are a community of Egyption people mainly coptic christians, also known as "garbage people".They are allowed to collect waste from the city Ciaro and dispose of it usually feeding their pigs.

Where do they live?

The zabaleen live in "Garbage city " as named. In Ciaro the zabaleen (which there are 60,000 - 70,000 of them) are mainly descendants of poor farmers from the upper city who settled in the 1950s in the city Ciaro.

How do they make a living from rubbish?

The zabbaleen usually performed this service very cheaply or even for free. They made their living by sorting recycled or reuseable waste materials. The waste food they collect is fed to live stock, mainly pigs or poultry. Then other materials like steel, plastic bottles and glass are sorted by hand and sold as raw materials. The other items are repaired or sometimes reused. Then they burn some materials for fuel.Males traditionally collect waste from homes by donkey or cart. This is then sorted out by the women of the zabbaleen family.Zabbaleen are claimed to recycle 80 - 90% of the waste they gather. This amount is what most modern waste management aspire to.However the zabbaleen do not collect all waste and tend to concentrate on richer areas,so in some ways they are loosing out on money.

In what ways do the zabbaleen offer a sustainable solution to waste disposal?

They function by collecting between a third and a half of waste within 6500 tonnes, but have tried to be replaced by modern foreign companies, but residents complain about the higher cost with the modern service and also say the zabbaleen recycle more than these new services.

traffic home work

Five things in London which help prevent traffic problems

computer technology

The only way to reduce traffic in cities today is to reduce the need of people traveling to and from work, education and shopping. This is easier said than done. Now a days trafffic causes alot of problems in cities like London, but with computer technology around this can help with anything.Because Londons CBD has the big branded shops and departments, the high street becomes a very hectic place to be including driving through the city centre. But computer technology is becoming more advanced, the internet is now used to shop online to save hassel of driving. This is a great way to reduce traffic especially in cities like London becuase all the main shops in the CBD create alot of cars building up on the main streets to get to the shops, where as if we encourage more people to shop online this will reduce the need of people to travel and save money on petrol which could be wasted.Internet shopping cannot stop traffic by people wanting to shop in the city but it deffinately will help settle vehicles building up.

Londons under ground tubes and buses

Public transoprtation is a great way to save unessacery journeys through cities like London. we suffer from traffic in cities because we use are individual transport to get to places, but the more sensible option would be to use Londons underground tubes because no traffic is caused, it also takes half the time to get to places than it would by single transport. Also if more of the public used Londons buses no traffic would occur on the main roads because the majority would be traveling all together making the most of vehcile space, meaning less un-nessacery cars traveling on the road.

The oyster card

The oyster card was invented for use of Londons underground station, but also any buses. This seasonal ticket is simular to a bus pass but the only difference is that you can use this on the tubes aswell and not have to pay every time you visit the staion or get on a bus. This is a really effective way to reduce the need of you using your car to drive through the busy city of London and create more traffic. It saves money on petrol, saves time on your journey and once again prevents traffic in Londons CBD.

Park and rides

Park and rides are not used regularly enough and we dont always think about why they are here. They simply keep cars out of the city centre so traffic cannot be built up,instead you park your car on the frame of the city and travel publicly by bus to get to where you need.In a city as big as London the park and ride facility sometimes cannot be used as often as it should, because London is so big the park and rides have to be situated on the frame of the CBD which can be uneasy acces for people to get to and this is why people choose to travel individualy because they find it a quicker journey.

Multy story car parks

The high streets of London are the most busiest parts because of the shops, banks, offices etc.People want to be as close to the high streets as possible but there are very few available car parking spaces around, and the very few that are cost alot of money to keep a vehicle there because it is a valued and useful easy place to park your car.But we dont think of all the multy story car parks that are available and how they are equally as handy.Firstly they cost half the price it would to keep your car on the main street, you would be able to park your car for twice as long for half the price in a multy story car park. This is not such a popular option all because poeple want to be as close to the CBD as possible.About ninety percent of people choose to cause there own traffic by fighting for the very few spaces available on the high street, instead of simply saving money by keeping your car out of traffic and parking it in a multy story car park.

Finlly to conclude all these facilities which are purposed to keep traffic at bay do cost money, but nothing is free for transport especially in a city. But on the other hand the buses, tubes, car parks and rides and also computer technology all save money aswell because they reduce the oppurtunity for people wasting petrol getting stuck in traffic in the city.I discovered that also these facilities have things in common they are never situated right in the core of the CBD because there job is to aim to keep cars out of this area!

Princess hayes home work

1. Exeter was a small city which has grown over the years and became more popular, since going through a stage of derilection, and now from the recent new shopping centre Princess hayes it is alot more revitalized.its location has actually slowly moved over the years in a way that because the outer suburbs are being added to, its moved over.

2. Rural urban development means the older rural parts are becoming run down therefore need to be redeveloped.

 3. Exeters city council,Thomas sharp decided to build plan and build Princess hay after it was bombed in the war. This was clearly chosen to be built because of the lost space which would be wasted if no plans on restoring any buildings werent being thought of. I do believe that it was a good choice to do something with the wasted space but rejcting to restore the old builgs was not, because it does not keep the originality of Exeter otherwise.
4. The objections by the local Princess hay development were that it would be demolishing eight acres of land which would be the key parts of Exexter, its been argued that Exeter needs to compete with Cribbs causeway, this whole redevelopment would take too long and is a too bigger project to tackle in a city like this.
5. The terms regeneration means (regenerate) improve and compare differences to make the project (or in this case make Princess hayes) a better and regenerated part of exeter.
Revitalized/revitalize means refresh a worndown or even derilected town city, you could describe it as liven up.
Sustainable urban redevelopment is when it must meet the social needs of people whilst conservng the enviroment and enchancing the local economy.
Mixed land use for example mixed land use with resedential areas, town planners increasingly encourage people to live in the CBD. This creates
a 24 hour city, and maximises potential of valuable land space. Conservation is where improvements occur when a building or project is changed/restored in this case and the improvements are compared with the old parts.

6. Princess hayes is deffinately revitalized especially the modern buildings which are shown on the virtual tour where Debhanams is and also the new restaraunts and cafes really stand out and revitalize the area. The main points that revitalize exeters CBD is the new high rise flats which are very expensive and very few people can afford these, only buisness men ect. Also the new princess hay has new public art, public open spaces where you can sit and also places to park bikes etc.Along with these good new points for exeters CBD, they have also still preserved the old tunnels and roman wall.

7. Princess hayes is a great example of sustainable redevelopment because it covers the main three componenets to what make it sucessful, which are economic, enviroment and social the situation for the shopping centre is briliant becaus eit thinks of theese topics well and the individual buildings there self really adress this too.
